Lanterns

Globular lanterns made from red silk or paper around a bamboo or wire frame are traditionally hung around Chinese houses to celebrate the New Year. On Maozhang there are either used singly, or together with other "auspicious" symbols such as the sacred lily, to celebrate and wish long life to Chairman Mao and the red flag flying over Tiananmen.

In the absence of any contrary dates, it is possible that these badges were issued in time to be worn at New Year.
