Cargo ships occasionally appeared on Maozhang, underlining the importance of sea trade to a near-isolated nation (cf the revolutionary model opera On the Dock); however it was warships that took pride of place. Some of the badges commemorated past events, such as Mao's speech in February 1953 calling for a strong navy, while others referenced contemporary events.
