Like their ceramic counterparts, bamboo Maozhang were conservative in design and generally used a frontal portrait rather than the profiles common on aluminium badges. Sunrays were not shown, and embellishments to the Chairman's image were largely confined depicting one of the revolutionary sacred sites beneath his portrait.
